Let’s Talk About Statistics

Let’s start about being clear about what the 5 categories of race are on the census: American Indian or Alaska Native, Black or African American, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander and White. There are two categories for ethnicity: Hispanic or Latino or Non-Hispanic or Latino. Hispanic is not considered to be a race on the census. In 2013, after the second census in history that allowed for a person to choose two races, there were 9.3 million multiracial people counted which is 3% of the population.

This chart shows the breakdown in thousands of the racial identification of the multiracial people who responded to the survey. This is comprised of 5 million adults and 4.3 million children. Among all multiracial Americans, the median age is 19 compared with 38 for single race Americans.

I love this chart because it can open people’s eyes and make them aware that multiracial people are not just a mix of White and Black. My own mother said she didn’t think of a person being Asian and White as being multiracial and I don’t think she is alone. One of the largest populations of multiracial people on the rise is Native-American and White, I was surprised by that statistic. We can see that the multiracial melting pot has a lot more ingredients then people realize. According to this chart there are at least 1,519,000 other two race groups. It’s not just white and another race. Being Black and Asian for example is multiracial. We are so many and so diverse. I want to see faces and hear stories to make the charts and statistics come alive!

I see this as an opportunity to hear about more perspectives and experiences. Lets start a conversation!

  1. “We can see that the multiracial melting pot has a lot more ingredients then people realize.” I really love this line! There are so many dimensions to being multi-racial, and those dimensions only begin with race. I like where you are going with this and really hope that you get a lot of participation on your Instagram page. I would love to hear everyone’s stories and learn more! -Jaclyn
