This blog was inspired by a conversation that I had with my 6 year old daughter. It was the first race conversation between us and it was sparked by her hearing about Rosa Parks at school. She was shocked to find out that she was black like Rosa Parks and I was shocked that she was shocked. I am married in my 40’s and I am biracial. I am married to an Irish guy and we have three children. Triplets actually, one boy and two girls! As I said I was sparked! I was reminded about how excited I was when I heard that the 2000 census would allow for people to choose 2 races. This has never been afforded to the population before that moment. EVER.
I want to embark on a journey to hear as many stories from as many multiracial people and families as I can and share our experiences with the world.
At a time when self-identification is so prevalent and we are moving towards acceptance as a nation, I feel that multiracial people should have a platform to be heard. My life has changed from being the only person in my town that looked like me and having no one to identify with to watching the world become more diverse but I’m still unsure of how to express who I am racially. I mean, I am just me, but I grew up in a world that told me I am black. Black period. I am not and I was never comfortable with that. I see that other multiracial people identify with one race or the other and I am fascinated.
We are a beautiful diverse people and I would like us to take a journey together and share our life experiences. We should be counted. We are on the census.
